Linköpings Studentspelmanslag

Strängar och Rör (or Strings and Pipes) is a student association at Linköping University that plays and performs traditional music, to unite people in dance and song, old as young. We consist of trad music making students and alumni who works to keep the musical traditions alive and well. You wil usually find us on one of the trad music events around sweden, and especially at the trad music cafés [Folkmusikcafé] that are made possible by another association; Folkmusik in Linköping.

Our rehearsals are open for anyone interested in learning, or sharing traditional music. Since the folk music tradition in the nordic countries historically has been passed down through oral and learning-by-ear methods, we use the same methods at our rehearsals. We perform our own arrangements, composed around the traditional melodies we learned during the semester, at concerts and dances.

We also arrange other activities, during the semester, for our members to keep up the interest.
We arrange band camps, Jam at jul-parties, concentrate on concerts and chirp in shrubbery, but above all else we try to have fun!

What even is a “Folkmusiker”?

For those that have never seen a folkmusiker in the wild, they might seem strange or even intimidating.
But fear not, they are completely harmless as long as you don’t find yourself inbetween one and his/her instrument, when their favourite tune comes up in the jam session.

Strängar och Rör meets up once a week to jam, rehearse tunes and arrangements, fika, socialize and then jam some more. We play music from several different traditions and origins, with some extra focus on the tunes that originate from Östergötland, where we are based.

Welcome to our rehearsals to see if this might be something for you.

Can i book you for my event?

Of course! We perform concerts, play for dances, mingle music and more.

For our planning to work out well and stress free, we need to know where, when and what format you need, as well as a rough number of people you want on stage. Please email oss with the details, and we will respond as soon as possible. You can also use the form below to contact us.

I want to join in, how?

Anyone who plays an instrument is welcome to join us! Since all tunes are taught by ear, it helps if you have some experience learning tunes by ear since before. But we can also provide sheet music and/or chord progressions if needed.

At rehearsals we learn new tunes, practise groove, jam and of course fika. We focus on music for the enjoyment, and don’t shy away from public performances at music festivals and events.

Please note that we cannot provide instruments, which means that you will need to bring your own to be able to participate.
